Who are you?

Alexandre Scarvelis, General Manager of Hotel Balzac in Paris, on the Champs-Elysées. Hotel Balzac is a beautiful 5-star luxury boutique hotel made up of of 70 rooms, which opened in July 2007 after 2 years of renovation.

What do you like about what you do?

Meeting new customers and providers everyday is the most thrilling part of my job. Enjoying people from all over the world, with different culture, personal history and occupations. It is really enriching as you have to greet them according to their own traditions, yet they all have to be satisfied and ensure to make them come back.

What don't you like about what you do?

That I am not able to meet all the clients, even though our team is dedicated to make their stay the most enjoyable one, I would like to see them all.

Please tell us about your hotel and your aims with it?

Hotel Balzac is a unique property, mixing the traditional decor with contemporary fabrics along with a gourmet restaurant, rated 3-star at Michelin Guide. A stay at the Balzac is an once-in-a-lifetime experience.

My goal for the Balzac? Make it one of the best hotels in Paris, reaching the top 20 in 2010. We can make it.

Are you working with blogs and if yes, what is your favourite blog?

Not that much actually, except my friends' ones.
I truly think this is a great medium and I will create one for the Balzac for sure.

The Quintessential Parisian Hideaway

Hotel Balzac, one of Paris' top hotels reopened in July 2007 following a two and a half year, €11million refurbishment. Interior architect Anne-Marie Sabatier, who previously worked with star designer Pierre-Yves Rochon has kept the innately romantic Parisian style. Using Designers Guild rich, vibrant and warm colours - turquoise blue, chestnut, plum and copper, the hotel's 57 luxury guestrooms and 13 suites carefully combine elegant and contemporary furnishings blending different styles and periods. Individually sourced, the bedroom and suite furniture is from the famous Italian designer Capellini and the hall and lounge furniture from Ebènisterie Masson and Philippe Coudray.

The Tai Ping carpets and rugs stylishly incorporate the hotel's own monogram and there are original 18^th and 19^th century multilayered lithographs from D'Kozone depicting scenes of life in Paris at that time. This modern take on neo-classical décor provides a romantic hotel with a contemporary edge

The hotel's 'pièce de résistance' is the penthouse floor which includes The Royal suite and The Presidential suite. A new General Manager for Hotel de Vigny

Alexandre Scarvelis, General Manager of the Balzac Hotel Paris, is now also the General Manager of the hotel's sister property, Hotel De Vigny Paris. Paris Film Festival to Premiere on Champs-Elysées

From the 29 September - 14 October, the Paris Motor Show will be unveiling the latest innovations in motoring, out of this world concept cars... and the supercars of tomorrow.

Taking place at the Paris expo Porte de Versailles (75015, Paris), this two week event is set to attract the biggest names in the industry... and satisfy the thousands of enthusiasts and professionals due to flock to the biggest motor show Paris has ever seen.

Innovations and Inventions at the Paris Motor Show

Cars looking to make a splash this year include: the new Honda CR-Z, a brand new Maserati, the new Lexus concept car, Peugeot 208 GTi, a possible Buick droptop, hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander... and perhaps even a successor to McLaren's F1 hypercar - with the motoring giant set to unveil their latest car at the show.

New energies will also be a big theme this year, with the motor show encouraging the active participation of all attendees. A large 400m indoor circuit, along with a 2km city circuit will be in use for the testing of new electric and hybrid vehicles. There will also be an electric karting track for young people aged between 6 and 14.

From October 10th 2012 - 28th January 2013 the Grand Palais, Galeries nationales is hosting a comprehensive showcase of Edward Hopper's work.

This retrospective exhibition covers the two main elements of his work; his formative years (1900 - 1924) and his mature years (through to 1966).

Emergence & American Realism

The formative section compares and contrasts his earlier efforts with that of his contemporaries and other Parisian influences; whilst the latter concentrates on his evolvement into what is widely considered to be the finest proponent of American Realism.

The exhibition will delve into the complex aspects of his work and analyse the contradictory ways in which his art has been interpreted over the years.

Hopper in Paris & Beyond

Hopper owes a great deal of his early development to his time spent in Paris; for a year in 1906 and shorter stays towards the end of the decade. The artist was heavily influenced by his surroundings, and by the work of Manet and Degas. The influence of Degas is particularly apparent in the originality of Hopper's angles, symmetry and his flair for poetic dramatisation.

During his stay in Paris, Hopper took up the mantel of impressionism, styling his techniques to explore harmonious balance and pleasure. Whilst back in the US he embraced the Ashcan School of which he had been a founder member. It was this collision of styles that drew out his version of American Realism and produced some of the most famous art works ever created.
